Abstract

This study examines how the use of Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) influences impulsive buying behavior among productive-age Muslims and evaluates its compatibility with Islamic consumption ethics, particularly the principles of wasathiyah (moderation), avoidance of israf (excess), and tabdzir (wastefulness). It argues that QRIS accelerates impulsive buying through frictionless payment mechanisms and monetary dissociation, potentially challenging Hifdz al-Maal (protection of wealth). A qualitative descriptive approach with a normative-theological orientation was employed. Primary data were collected through structured in-depth interviews with 10 active QRIS users aged 18–33 (5–10 transactions per month) using purposive sampling, complemented by observations and document analysis (Qur’an, Hadith, DSN-MUI fatwas, and relevant literature). Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model and verified through Maqashid Shariah parameters. All 10 informants reported that QRIS reduced transaction time to under 10 seconds, limiting rational consideration; six perceived digital balances as “less tangible,” indicating a weakened “pain of paying”; seven experienced disruptions in allocating primary needs or savings due to unplanned digital spending; and promotional triggers (cashback/discounts) increased transaction frequency up to 10 times per month for some participants. These findings confirm that QRIS facilitates short-term, pleasure-seeking consumption patterns that risk violating moderation principles. However, the small purposive sample limits generalizability, and the qualitative design prioritizes depth over statistical measurement, restricting causal inference. Nonetheless, the study highlights the need to integrate ethical financial literacy and self-control mechanisms into digital payment ecosystems to align technological advancement with Islamic economic values.
