Abstract

Regional development inequality remains one of the major challenges affecting the resilience of Indonesia's food system and the achievement of sustainable food security. This study aims to examine the relationship between regional development disparities and food system vulnerability in Indonesia through a structured literature review using a spatial econometric perspective. The study synthesizes findings from previous research employing spatial analytical approaches, including Spatial Autoregressive (SAR), Spatial Error Model (SEM), and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), to explain spatial dependence and regional spillover effects on food security. The review indicates that disparities in regional development consistently increase food system vulnerability by limiting access to food, weakening logistics connectivity, and widening inequalities in economic opportunities. Strong spatial dependence demonstrates that food insecurity in one region is closely associated with neighboring areas due to interconnected distribution networks and regional economic structures. These findings highlight the importance of spatially integrated food policies that extend beyond administrative boundaries to strengthen resilient food systems, improve community well-being, and support sustainable development. The study concludes that reducing regional inequality through coordinated spatial planning and cross-regional collaboration is essential for achieving long-term food security and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
