Corporate Culture and Neoliberalism in Education: A Critical Review

The paradigm of freedom in higher education has given rise to neoliberalism as a hegemonic ideology that has negatively affected the higher education sector in Indonesia. The practice of neoliberal colonization tends to transform higher education institutions into corporate-oriented centers, where academics are no longer positioned as critical and rational intellectuals but merely as workers fulfilling market demands, while reinforcing the liberal assumption that quality education requires high costs. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. The findings indicate, first, that several intellectual figures criticize the current higher education system for becoming increasingly commercialized and drifting away from the true spirit of education. They emphasize that education should not become a commodity accessible only to certain groups, but must remain a right for all citizens. Second, the study highlights the importance of deliberative education concepts, particularly the idea proposed by Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, which emphasizes integrating Islamic values into higher education curricula and focusing on the formation of adab in order to create an “insan adabi” or civilized individual. Furthermore, although education requires organized funding to maintain its quality, productive waqf can serve as sustainable financial support for educational institutions, while qardhul hasan provides interest-free loans for students to ensure broader and debt-free access to education. Both mechanisms contribute to financial independence and educational accessibility.
