The Advance Organizer Model in Learning: A Systematic Literature Review
Keywords:
Advance organizer, critical thinking, collaborative learning, learning outcome, meaningful learningAbstract
This systematic literature review examines the implementation and effectiveness of the Advance Organizer Model in learning across various educational contexts. Drawing from David Ausubel's theory of meaningful verbal learning, the Advance Organizer Model emphasizes the importance of cognitive structure in facilitating knowledge acquisition and retention. Through a comprehensive analysis of empirical studies indexed in major academic databases including Scopus and Google Scholar, this review synthesizes research findings on the application of advance organizers in educational settings published between 2018 and 2025. The review identifies key characteristics of advance organizer implementation, examines its impact on learning outcomes, critical thinking skills, and collaborative learning, and discusses variations in effectiveness across different educational levels and subject areas. Findings indicate that advance organizers significantly enhance students' conceptual understanding, improve long-term retention, and promote meaningful learning by bridging prior knowledge with new information. The model demonstrates particular effectiveness when combined with collaborative learning approaches and technology-enhanced environments. However, implementation success depends on factors such as organizer design, learner characteristics, and instructional context. This review contributes to the field by providing evidence-based insights for educators and researchers regarding optimal implementation strategies and identifying gaps for future research. The synthesis reveals that advance organizers remain a valuable pedagogical tool in the 21st century, adaptable to both traditional and digital learning environments, and effective in developing higher-order thinking skills essential for contemporary education.
