Abstract

Numeracy literacy plays an important role in supporting elementary school students’ ability to solve mathematical problems, particularly those involving real-life contexts. However, empirical evidence on the relationship between numeracy literacy and mathematical problem-solving ability at the elementary level remains limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship and contribution of numeracy literacy to mathematical problem-solving ability among fifth-grade students at MIS DDI Baru Baru Tanga. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design, involving all fifth-grade students totaling 30 participants selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a numeracy literacy test and a mathematical problem-solving test that had been validated by experts. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The results showed that students’ numeracy literacy (M = 67.43; SD = 9.12) and mathematical problem-solving ability (M = 69.10; SD = 10.05) were both in the moderate category. Pearson correlation analysis indicated a positive and significant relationship between numeracy literacy and mathematical problem-solving ability (r = 0.653; p < 0.001). Furthermore, regression analysis revealed that numeracy literacy contributed 42.6% to the variance in students’ mathematical problem-solving ability (R² = 0.426). These findings indicate that numeracy literacy significantly contributes to students’ mathematical problem-solving skills.
